Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to challenge certain calls from the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
