The star has donated the full amount of his £25,000 Mercury Prize winnings to the trust for venues, which functions to save the Britain's small live music spots.

He was given the cheque on mid-October as his new release People Watching was named the outstanding release of the previous year.

The musician has chosen to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role local spots played in his early career.

"I would not have achieved what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the gigs I performed around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," remarked Fender. "These locations are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these venues have shut down – about 16% of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, top acts such as Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by including a modest fee to their admission fees, which benefits local stages.

He also joined in, raising more than £100,000 on his live tour to assist numerous small stages across Britain.

These funds supported venues that were dealing with possible closure due to challenges stemming from water damage, fires and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and noise complaints.

Other venues received funding support in improving facilities and technical equipment that directly benefitted musicians and fans.

"The notion that revenue from concerts in big venues supports the smaller venues, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has commented.

The musician is far from the only musician to donate his Mercury Prize funds to good deeds.

In the band earned the award in the year 1996 for their release the album, lead singer Cocker announced that the group would contribute their prize money to the charity War Child.

During 2002, musician she divided her bounty between a few organizations, including the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I donated a £1,000 to my local community centre, to their gymnastics class, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they required updated gear," Ms Dynamite explained to outlets.

Previously, they contributed their funds to the youth organization that developed their act, alongside other local music groups.

Additionally winners that year M People contributed their winnings to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was diagnosed the condition.

"The victory was sufficient," said artist the singer. "The cash was the bonus but we could do without the extra, because we had the main prize. So our success touched another person's life."

Last week, the trust announced it had saved a couple of small stages in that region, by transferring them to public stewardship.

The first in that area and the second in that location were bought under the public acquisition initiative, which is backed by the arts council and music fans who acquire "stakes" in the venues.
