Each time a significant honors show nears, there’s always a clamor for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would board games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything that year
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
- Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
