Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
