The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
